Carpenter knew restaurant and bar business
Apr 13, 2018Although our father was a carpenter by trade, he knew the ins-and-outs of the restaurant business and had helped my brother when Joe first operated a pizza shop in the Strip District,” said one of Mr. Caliguire's other sons, Anthony. Sarafina H. “Joe” Caliguire of Ingram, a retired member of Carpenters Union Local 142, died on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, in his home. He was 77. “Dad enjoyed the work and was always ready to wash dishes, shine the silverware, tend bar and wait on tables when necessary,” said Anthony Caliguire. “And he was great when he was bartending. He not only made a good drink, but he was a great storyteller who entertained the customers.” Born and raised in the West End, Joe Caliguire was one of three children in the family of railroader Salvatore Caliguire and his wife, Catherine Kelly Caliguire. As a teenager, Mr. Caliguire helped his family by working with local contractors who taught him the carpentry business. “They could see that Dad was a bright kid and they taught him the business. Later on, he specialized in cabinetmaking,” said Dean Caliguire, adding that his father in later years worked for well-known office furniture suppliers such as J.C. Schultz Interiors of Upper St. Clair. When Mr. Caliguire married Barbara “Barbie” Mareno of Crafton, he also found a partner who enjoyed sports like he did. For more than 40 years, they were fixtures at the various sporting events of the Montour School District. “My parents attended all of their sons, granddaughters, nieces and nephews sporting events,” said Dean Caliguire. “And although they weren't that well-off financially, they held tailgate parties after each Pitt football game (1985-89) when I was a member of the Pitt football team,” he added. In addition to his wife, Barbara Mareno Caliguire, sons, Anthony, Joseph and Dean, all of Thornburg, Mr. Caliguire is survived by a brother, Jack Caliguire of Florida; a sister, Jean Herman of McKees Rocks; and six grandchildren. Mr. Caliguire was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Stuart. A Mass ... (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
